Holy See United?

CNN reports that the Vatican is pondering creating a World Cup-level soccer team. Apparently, the Pontiff and several Cardinals with the power to create are huge Football fans. Don't believe me?

That a small Nation-state would have a football club is not unprecedented - San Marino and Andorra (yes, I needed to Wiki them too!) have fielded teams for years albeit with decidedly lack-luster results (both are winless in competition against European league teams). But that a global religion such as Catholicism (represented by the Vatican, also a Nation-state) would have a team...well, that does seem a bit odd, arguments about "sport as religion" aside.

Beyond begging the questions "why?" (a missionary role perhaps?) and "who'd play?" (the Swiss Guards? Catholic-school Nuns?), it presents us with an interesting theological question - If they don't win every game, does that call into question the existence and omnipotence of the Almighty?
