So, getting started...
Time to put out a soapbox in cyberspace! I'm experimenting here...seeing if having my own blog fulfills some need that I suspect has been there, un-supported and un-nurtured and without the proper outlet since college when I considered everything, wrote about a lot and debated endlessly with friends, roommates, classmates and professors. Be it a PolySci class, gregarious discussion over too many drinks or all night walks around Washington DC's famous places, there was always associated with these times, a substantial sense of freedom and personal growth. It was like getting thoughts out of my head made room for new ones or the evolution of others!
Writing in particular though, I think, has an inherent and amplified sense of accomplishment...Likely because the written word has longevity over speech. For the writer, it provides ample opportunity to reexamine one's thoughts, reconsider one's work and refine the output (where else in life to you get a similar type of "do over?!"). It's the linguistic equivalent of sketching with an eraser in hand. And the act of writing is without immediate influence (no interjections to break up thought processes, no facial expressions to interpret, rules of polite conversation to accommodate) which means that from a thought perspective, it's also purer.
So seeking a medium that provides for that kind of experience, I'm undertaking this endeavor. It's for me first and foremost. If I choose to share it with others, perhaps something they read (or see) will spark a thought, inspire them to reply (the internet equivalent of a conversation) or at the very least, provide a few moments of time spent in front of the computer that they deem a worthwhile use of their time. Maybe not.
This has all been so seemingly serious (I guess I'm just in that kind of mood at the moment) but it this won't necessarily be that kind of blog... Since I don't know what will move me to post, I can't say what the content will be like but I'm the kind of person who's fascinated by a lot, takes issue with even more and who loves to laugh at life so I'll speculate that just about any topic stands a good chance of showing up in this space. Supporting that inclination... at this very moment, fascination with a commercial hand dryer (the "Excelerator") is sharing space with a political rant. I can't wait to see what results!
